Why the Choice Matters More Than You Think
Pressure washing looks simple: point the wand, pull the trigger. But the same machine that restores a wall in the right hands can permanently etch concrete, strip sealant, force water behind fittings, and kill your garden in the wrong ones. Most damage we're called to fix wasn't caused by neglect — it was caused by the previous cleaner.
Choosing well comes down to asking the right questions upfront.
7 Questions to Ask Any Pressure Washing Company
1. Do you assess the surface before quoting?
A professional wants to know the age of the wall, its finish, and what's actually on it — algae, soot, rust, efflorescence, or paint. A quote given over the phone with no questions asked is a guess.
2. How do you decide on pressure?
The right answer involves surface age, nozzle selection, and distance — not "we use the strongest machine available." We've written about why high pressure isn't always better; any good operator should be able to explain the same logic.
3. Do you use chemical pre-treatment?
Biological growth must be killed at the root before washing, otherwise it returns within weeks. Ask what products are used and whether they're biodegradable and safe for plants and pets.
4. How do you protect the surrounding property?
Gates, motors, intercoms, lights, windows, vehicles, and planting all sit near walls. Ask how runoff and overspray are managed.
5. Are your prices transparent?
You should know the rate, the call-out fee, and what's included before the team arrives. Vague "we'll see on the day" pricing tends to grow on the day.
6. Can I see previous work?
Real before-and-after photos of similar surfaces — not stock images — are the best evidence a company knows what it's doing.
7. What happens if I'm not happy?
A professional company does a final walk-through with you and addresses missed areas before leaving.
Ask "what pressure will you use on my wall?" If the answer is a single number with no follow-up questions about the wall itself, keep looking.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Cash-only, same-day quotes with no written scope
- A turbo or 0° nozzle used on every surface
- No mention of pre-treatment, only "high-pressure blasting"
- No protective equipment or safety procedures on site
- Unwillingness to explain the process or show previous work
Stripes, tracking marks, and a rough, "fluffy" concrete surface are signs of over-pressured cleaning. That damage is permanent and makes the wall dirty faster in future.
Why a Local Company Matters
Gauteng's conditions are specific: a hot summer rainy season that drives algae growth, dry winters that bake dust onto surfaces, and heavy industrial soot around areas like Secunda and the East Rand. A company that works in these conditions every week knows which treatments hold up and how long a clean will realistically last.
We work across Johannesburg, Pretoria, the East Rand, and Mpumalanga's Highveld — see all the areas we cover on our service locations page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should a pressure washing company be insured?
It's worth asking. Work near gates, vehicles, windows, and electrical fittings carries some risk, and a professional operator should be able to explain how accidental damage would be handled.
How far in advance should I book?
Spring, from September to November, is the busiest season in Gauteng as homeowners prepare for the rains. Booking a few weeks ahead in spring is sensible; outside peak season we can usually schedule sooner.
Do I need to be home during the clean?
Not necessarily. As long as we have access to the wall and an outside tap, many clients are at work during the clean. We do recommend being available for the final walk-through, or we'll send photos.
